The #1 Worst Food to Eat for Hair Loss, Says Dietitian

This nutritious food may have some negative side effects.

Hair loss is a natural part of old age, but it may be extremely irritating. It's especially difficult to deal with when it's caused by things that are difficult or impossible to modify, such as genetics, stress, or the need to take certain medications.

However, there are some foods to consume, workouts, and supplements to take that may help. We spoke with Courtney D'Angelo, MS, RD, author at GoWellness, to learn more about the foods you should avoid if you're dealing with hair loss. And you might be surprised by the response!

According to D'Angelo, tuna, swordfish, shark, and king mackerel are some of the worst foods for hair loss. Here's why.

First and foremost, it's important to note that fish has numerous health benefits. Fatty fish, for example, has been linked to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, an improvement in cognitive health, and even a reduction in depression symptoms.

While fish can be beneficial to your health, it's vital to be aware of the risks of eating too much of certain types of fish, particularly those with higher mercury levels.

"High mercury levels have been related to hair loss," adds D'Angelo, "and these fish have greater mercury levels than other seafood options." "To avoid more hair loss, stay away from swordfish, king mackerel, shark, and even some tuna."

If you're currently experiencing hair loss, you might want to consider adding more vitamins or nutrients to your diet. You might begin by taking a multivitamin, and some study has even suggested that vitamin D pills may be beneficial in treating hair loss.
