Flu season has arrived, despite the hot weather. Even if you're aware of the healthiest foods to eat to keep your immune system robust during the fall and winter months, you could be damaging your immunity unwittingly. That's accurate; certain foods can make you more prone to illness. This includes the food you eat during breakfast.
It's critical to start your day with a healthy dose of crucial nutrients to strengthen your immune system. "It's crucial to focus a range of food types, including proteins, fiber-rich carbs, and anti-inflammatory fats," says Lisa Moskovitz, RD, CEO of NY Nutrition Group and author of The Core 3 Healthy Eating Plan.
Leaving those food categories out of your breakfast, on the other hand, can lower your immunity and have other harmful consequences for your overall health.
"Any breakfast combination strong in added sugars and anti-inflammatory saturated fats, such as pastries, sugary cereals, or processed meats," says Moskovitz, "may cause a rollercoaster of energy levels, hunger, attention, and even mood changes throughout the day."
According to Moskovitz, adding protein, fiber-rich carbs, and healthy fats to your meal, rather than relying on high-sugar or fatty breakfast products, is the key to maintaining a robust immune system.
"It's fine to have a muffin or a side of bacon on occasion," Moskovitz says, "but if you want to keep your body healthy, make breakfast as nutrient-dense as possible."
With the holiday season approaching, it's essential to establish healthy eating habits that will keep you healthy while enjoying the foods you love with your family and friends.
So put the sweet, greasy breakfast down. As the weather becomes colder, that's not the kind of routine you want to be setting for yourself and your immune system. Instead, opt for a nutrient-dense alternative such as avocado and eggs or porridge with fruit on top.
