The #1 Worst Drink That Ages Your Skin Faster, Says Science

Take caution with how much alcohol you consume, as there may be long-term effects on your skin.

We can use all the creams and moisturizers we want, but the specific physical effects of aging on our skin cannot be avoided. Luckily, what we eat and drink has a significant impact on how our skin ages with each passing year, so we can have some control over the rate of aging depending on the diet we pick.

Fruit, fatty fish, natural juices, tea, and plenty of water can help slow down the aging process, but some other foods and drinks might speed the process.

According to a study, alcohol is one of the worst drinks for accelerating the aging of your skin because of its impact on hydration and liver health, both of which are essential factors in the health of your skin as you grow.

In a recent article about drinks that speed up the aging process, expert Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD, author of The Sports Nutrition Playbook, says that alcohol can dehydrate your skin.

"As you get older, your skin thins and becomes drier (intrinsic aging), and external influences might speed this process," adds Goodson. "Because of alcohol's dehydrating effect, when drank in high amounts over time, it can contribute to more aged skin."

Regularly consuming excessive amounts of alcohol can also speed the aging of your skin by interrupting your sleeping patterns. According to a study published in Nature, men who used prominent alcohol had significantly more significant sleep problems. A study from Case Medical Center found that sleep problems can lead to accelerated aging over time.

In addition to physical indicators of aging caused by poor sleep, this study also found that a lack of adequate sleep can reduce a person's ability to recover from "exogenous stressors" over time.

Among these stressors are sunlight, some makeup or skincare ingredients, air pollution, and cigarette smoke.

It's one thing to drink alcohol daily, but consuming alcoholic beverages with a lot of added sugar in the components might negatively influence your complexion. This is due to a phenomenon known as "AGEs," which stands for Advanced Glycation End-products and is accelerated by consuming more sugar.

Finally, moderate alcohol consumption is generally safe and should not cause any health problems as you become older. However, it's crucial to keep track of how much you're regularly eating.
