Experts Say This Surprising Juice Blend Could Help with Arthritis Pain

Grapes-Juice

Two health experts offer advice on making this concoction that has supposedly helped "hundreds" of individuals.

If you could relieve joint pain and inflammation with a simple dietary change, wouldn't it be worth a shot? A nationally respected pharmacologist and medical researcher are promoting an easy, homemade (and perhaps delectable) recipe that some may dismiss as a fable but which specialists believe may indeed provide some physiological relief from arthritis pain.

Joe Graedon, M.S., and Teresa Graedon, PhD, broadcast The People's Pharmacy, a podcast based on the Graedons' more than 40 years of health writing. The Graedons answered a question from a reader who avoids taking over-the-counter medication to ease osteoarthritis pain because they're on a prescription blood thinner in a recent Seattle Times column.

In answer, the Graedons recommended a recipe for arthritis therapy that the reader had requested: grape juice and pectin. "[...W] e have heard from hundreds of readers that it can be useful against arthritis pain," they continued, even though "there is no scientific study backing" this cure.

Juice

According to the Graedons, there are numerous formulas for making this juice blend for arthritis pain: "There are several formulas. A spoonful of liquid pectin (Certo brand) is dissolved in 8 ounces of purple grape juice in one method. This is a once-a-day dose.

"Others choose to use the cure more regularly, two or three times per day." They combine two teaspoons, Certo, with 3 ounces grape juice."

Of course, you should always consult your doctor before trying home treatment for any illness, including arthritic pain. If you're thinking about trying the grape juice-pectin combination for arthritis, remember that pectin can cause allergic reactions in some people. Another technique to get the best grape juice is to go for the one with the least added sugar.
